Cattle vets take on Vetlife 4×4 challenge

As the evening of BCVA Congress ’22 unfolded, four cattle vets entered into a conversation that would spark a remarkable journey. Mark Pearson, Sam Fenemore, Keith McKeeman, Iain McCormick shared their aspirations to leave a mark in the veterinary community through a good deed. And thus, Vetlife 4×4 emerged.

UK Peaks challenge

Hailing from diverse corners of the United Kingdom – Northern Ireland, England, Scotland, and Wales – the group envisioned an impressive challenge: scaling the highest peaks of their home nations – Sleive Donard, Snowdon/Yr Wyddfa, Scafell Pike, and Ben Nevis in aid of Vetlife.

Originally scheduled for May 2023, the team faced an unexpected setback when Keith sustained an injury, temporarily halting their plans. Undeterred, they regrouped at BCVA ’23, reigniting their passion to make a difference. Now, with renewed determination, they’ve rescheduled their climb for May 2024.

Invaluable support

Mark Pearson expressed his anticipation for the challenge, stating, “I’m really looking forward to spending 4 days in the mountains with 3 good friends. Spending time in the hills always helps settle my busy head. Finding the time to meet up and talk can be difficult, so combining this opportunity with fund raising seems like a double win. I’m particularly looking forward to climbing Sleive Donard, because I’ve never been to that area before.

Reflecting on the significance of Vetlife, Mark added, “Vetlife is a charity it’s easy to ignore, until you need it. It works away, helping other people. For me, our day came when we lost a colleague, who was a close friend of mine. The support that Vetlife provided as our Practice made its way through those awful days was invaluable. As well as being hugely rewarding, our profession can be very challenging. I’d encourage everyone to support Vetlife so they will be there to help, if it’s needed.”

Vetlife Trustee Robyn Lowe commended the group, saying, “Keith, Sam, Iain and Mark have planned a really impressive trip, tackling Sleive Donard, Snowdon/Yr Wyddfa, Scafell Pike and Ben Nevis.

This challenge is particularly special to see, as it raises vital funds for Vetlife’s future whilst also highlighting the importance of connection and friendship.”
