Stress, Depression & Suicide

The veterinary profession has a suicide rate four times that of the general population and twice that of doctors and dentists (Mellanby). It would seem that stress and depression within the profession are very high and further research is currently being conducted to investigate this more fully.

The links to the left will take you to more information on the help available for stress, depression or suicide to the profession and information on how to get help if someone is experiencing a mental health crisis and needs emergency or out of hours assistance.

If you would like to speak to someone with personal experience of the veterinary profession about whatever is troubling you, Vet Helpline offers an empathetic listening service and can tell you how to get more specialist help if necessary.
Tel: 07659 811 118 (local call rates apply, 24hr rapid response answer phone).

In addition, the Veterinary Surgeons’ Health Support Programme is also available to provide completely confidential professional help with alcohol, drug, addiction & mental health issues.
