Frequently Asked Questions About VBF

Who qualifies for VBF financial and other help?
Vets on RCVS register, their families and dependants, normally domiciled in UK, includes divorced spouse and common law partners
 
How are requests for help assessed?
Completion of a form setting out income and expenses, must show hardship and need for financial help, often with follow-up telephone enquiry and / or visit
 
How is hardship determined?
Current available income is calculated, a threshold is set below which VBF will consider a regular monthly payment or a one-off grant
 
Are other sources of finance taken into account?
Yes, VBF is the fourth line of support having taken into account the applicants personal assets, DWP benefits and help from family.
 
Is there a limit for the length of time VBF will provide financial support?
No, the circumstances of each case are reviewed annually and the level of assistance is maintained or raised or reduced accordingly.
 
Who decides the level of assistance?
Each application is examined by at least 2 directors, usually 3, and all decisions are ratified by the Council of Representatives.
 
How long will it take to make a decision?
When the circumstances require an urgent response, the applicants can expect to get a reply and, if required, a cheque within 10 days.
 
What if the bailiffs are at the door?
VBF may be able to reassure creditors and debt collectors that help will be provided within a certain time.
 
Can I apply for a loan in case of a short term difficulty?
Yes, occasionally VBF does provide interest free loans provided an agreement is signed setting out the terms for repayment.
 
Can VBF provide loans to cover practice debts?
No, VBF does not have the resources and would not expect to substitute for a bank.
 
What is the policy for bungalow residents?
The 4 bungalows in Dorset are occupied by VBF beneficiaries, almshouse rules apply, rent free, subject to maintenance charge.
 
Who looks after the bungalow residents?
Residents are expected to look after themselves, emergency call-line help is available, husband and wife liaison officers live in the village.
