Leaving A Legacy

Making a new Will

To make sure that your wishes are carried out, it is advisable to consult a solicitor. The solicitor will also be able to advise you on appointing executors and reducing your liability to inheritance tax.  If you were kind enough to leave a legacy to the Veterinary Benevolent Fund, any money left to the charity would be free of inheritance tax.

Updating your Will

Minor alterations such as leaving a bequest or a legacy to the Veterinary Benevolent Fund can be made by a codicil, which is a formal addition to your Will. Do not change your will by crossing parts out or adding words as this may invalidate it. If you want to change your Will, your solicitor will draw up the necessary codicil for you to sign or you can download a codicil form here.

Your Wishes

If you include an instruction in your Will or let your executors know your wishes, you might prefer that donations were made to the Veterinary Benevolent Fund in your memory rather than having flowers sent.

Fundraising

Apart from donations and legacies, other ways that members of the profession have been kind enough to raise funds for VBF include:

  • Sponsored Cycle Rides
  • Golf Tournaments
  • Requesting donations in lieu of veterinary fees at agricultural shows
  • Collections at meetings of BVA divisions and other veterinary organisations.

If you’re planning to enter a sponsored event for us, you can now raise your sponsorship money without even leaving your chair. No more dealing with cash or cheques, no more hassling friends and family. All you do is create your own Just Giving sponsor page at www.justgiving.com, email a link to all your friends and get them to donate quickly and easily online with a credit or debit card. Plus, online donations from UK taxpayers collect a 28% tax bonus! If your event is not listed, please contact the Just Giving helpdesk on 0800 0286 183. Or email helpdesk@justgiving.com

Membership

As a Member of the VBF you will be entitled to stand for election to the Council of Representatives & Board, attend the AGM, receive a copy of the Annual Report & Accounts each year and be consulted from time to time on the strategic direction and work of the Fund.

If you would like to become a Life Member of the Fund, the minimum contribution is £250. Or, you could become a regular Member by making a commitment to make a regular donation of at least £50 per annum (download a pdf membership form and direct debit mandate here). The VBF depends on these contributions to maintain its range of support services for the profession. So please do become a Member – your help will make a real difference.

As well as providing regular financial support, our Members often help us by providing information about colleagues who may be experiencing difficulties, take part in fundraising activities and spread the word to the profession about the help on offer from VBF.
